About The Elversphere

The Elversphere is a documentary film in production

A slippery enigma–the eel–swims across history, traversing oceans, streams, and cultures. From harvesters of juvenile eels in Maine to Asian aquaculture operators, from Japanese unagi experts to scientists on both sides of the Pacific, documentary film The Elversphere surfaces this unexpected web of connections in a mysterious and captivating journey befitting its subject.

We have been researching the film over the past few years and began initial field work and filming in 2024. We are actively fundraising and planning primary production for this feature length documentary.

The Elversphere is a newsletter

The Elversphere is an independent publication created to share the process of making this documentary with participants, fellow eel enthusiasts, and anyone else fascinated by eels and ecology. Emails will come monthly or as the mood strikes. There is the option to support our work by becoming a paid subscriber, or making a donation.

The Elversphere is a way of seeing/being in the world

The people we speak with that spend lots of time observing eels often share the unexpected environmental variables and relationships that influence eel behavior. Webs of influence and relationship extend throughout eel ecology, and this project. We aim to create and support connections between people across different fields and professions who are all involved with—and care about—the eel. We want The Elversphere project to be beneficial for both the eels and the humans that earn a living fishing, researching, and working with them.
